The tales of a waitress

I often find myself reminiscing about the few months I spent waitressing in a French Brasserie not so far from the Seine in the 5th arrondissement. It was a pleasant experience, seasoned with daunting psychological horror stories. Looking back on those days, I was constantly stressed : What if my tray, loaded with beers and cocktails, fell to the ground and splashed onto customers ? What if I forgot the order of a table of 10 people ? What if I had to wait on a table of 10 people ?

But there were these few moments where I felt completely at peace. When I would bartend during the day shifts and talk with the regulars. When I would perfect a cappuccino for a customer : three distinct layers of milk / double expresso / foam and a dash of cocoa powder as the cherry on top. When that same customer would compliment my masterpiece. It was those social interactions that kept me working at that place.

I also enjoyed people watching, it gave me a sense of tranquility observing the lives of others. Seeing a man sipping his green tea while reading a book. Seeing a woman alone at a table, enjoying the warmth of her hot chocolate, awaiting her date, then her date arrives and they embrace. Serving a couple multiple rounds of beers and seeing them laugh and giggle all night long. The comfort of a family sitting around a table sharing a meal. Or a book club getting together writing and discussing all while drinking des cafés crèmes

I miss the people. Being a part of their individual personal experiences and trying as best as I can to enhance it without them even noticing.
